there is a potential right now. yeah. and the obama administration should have seen this coming. they could have somehow and still can send out signals of what they intend to do with these higher decisions and the departure of nancy ann diparlo means there have got to be more women in the pipeline that the obama administration will appoint. i don't see how they can't be doing it because women were the backbone of the obama support for reelection. >> if we look at modern times and what past precedences have done, we look at president george w. bush increasing the number of women in his cabinet for 19% of his first term and the 24% in his second. president bill clinton saw the percentage of women rise from 27 to 44%. do you think that this could be the first time that we don't see the needle moving forward for a second term administration if president obama doesn't make some really sharp moves now to correct the diversity problem? >> think the pressure will be on for him to make sure that we don't see white men across the board the way we've seen in these early appointments. this is the piece of t

get to be that canopy-style party to feel like the voice is being heard? when we seed the obama administration back in for a second term? >> a couple things. the polls also showed lindsay lohan polled lower than congress. thank god for lindsay lohan pap thank you very much. we appreciate that. the first thing. the second thing and more important point is how you frame the question. and i think lieutenant governor is exactly right. we we want to be the party that reagan and frederick douglas and all of those great minds that kind of brought this coalition of folks together around the idea of individual freedoms, you know, that respected the rights and liberties of individuals, or do we want to be a pup tent party where we sit up in the corner of the world. and that's going to be the struggle over the next couple of years and we're again going back to the first question, the chris christies and the bobby jindals of the world can really begin to carve out this new space. look, everybody is not going to want to play, thomas. they're just not. you're going to have everybody look at a

into the administration, which has been the case by the way, not just in the obama administration but in the bush administration and clinton administration. for example, i -- jack lew came before the budget committee a couple of years ago, and i'm a member. i said, mr. lew, give me your understanding of the role that wall street played in terms of deregulation and deregulation of wall street that helped cause this terrible recession? he didn't think so. most economists do think so. all of those issues concern me. jack lew is a decent guy and smart guy and knows the budget. i want people in the administration prepared to stand up for struggling working families and are prepared to deal with wall street, not simply come from wall street. >> sir, you're on record about jack lew. i want to get you on record about the breaking news that jay rockefeller announcing he's not going to seek another term come 2014. he's been a five-term senator from west virginia. what does this mean to the balance of power in the senate? >> well, i'm not an expert on the politics of west virginia. jay rockefeller has been

house administrations, president obama is gearing up to play tough on the debt ceiling. and msnbc contributor, not a handwriting analysis expert, but we're going to ask you about it anyway. a really out john hancock for jack lew. but he's been in and out of washington for the '70s. he's been involved, jared, in balancing the budgets. as the gop is going to push for budget cuts to coincide with three more cliffs over the budget, how critical is jack lew going to be to the president in waging that fight? >> highly critical in precisely the ways you mentioned. by the way, i think it would be cool. we had that at the bottom of our currency. although i suspect he could change his signature for that. one of the things we know about jack lew is that he's been a tireless fighter to protect key areas of the budget, particularly where they affect economically vulnerable people. he's been a staunch defender of medicare, medicaid, of social security when it comes to economically vulnerable retirees. and the president has been forthright about this, a balanced plan going forward will involve s

for president obama as he was pushing this forth in his new team. early january he might put this out in the first week of his new administration. is the iron so hot at this moment that he really does have to strike here and now? >> because there are republicans worried about the future of their party if they don't do something, because it surprised me frankly after this election you didn't hear what you've heard after a few republican losses that there wasn't anything wrong with the party per se. neath needed to message it better. on immigration it was just the voices calling for the -- calling for the preliminary opposition to any reform, much quieter than they have. we don't know if we're going to hear them bring it up again when the house comes back. a lot of people in the tea party movement, very influential in the base, very influential because the base agrees with them, weren't really loud on immigration, but back when we talked about 2007, people like steve king were at the forefront of stopping this, and we're going to start hearing from them again. we'll see if there's enoug
